Porn operators have long been early adopters of new technology. Now it’s video on smartphones. What’s newly concerning about it is that video phone-based porn is getting more personal, more one-to-one, more like Webcam conversations. “Video sex chat,” as it’s described in this Washington Post piece, stands to make the adult content industry “big money,” according to the article and is already recruiting “models,” saying a free iPhone 4 comes with the job, in which an app called FaceTime “lets people call another iPhone 4 user and have live video conversations over a Wi-Fi connection using the front-facing camera on the new model.” Of course there are wonderful applications for FaceTime. You may’ve seen Apple TV ads showing brand-new parents showing video of their newborn to Granddad or a faraway soldier getting to see his wife’s ultrasound pictures. Not that the iPhone 4 is the only smartphone with video capabilities. Here’s PC World on how to “create, share, and play video” on Android phones, and elsewhere the Post cites Nielsen research showing that “Android software outsold Apple Inc.’s mobile operating system for the first time last quarter among new US smartphone users.”
